Roberto Carlos regrets the death of former Real Madrid President
As in Brazil, the COVID-19 virus has claimed many victims in Spain, especially among the elderly. And one of those victims was former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz.
Lorenzo Sanz was president of Real between 1995 and 2000, responsible for breaking the Champions League title fast on the Merengue team, which had lasted for over 30 years. In addition to this first European competition title in 1998, the team also won the second title days before the end of their term in 2000.
However, these titles were not enough to ensure his re-election, losing to the current president Florentino Pérez. Sanz's defeat is largely due to the club's financial situation, which was completely damaged, with debts to Lorenzo himself, for having acquired renowned players like Davor Suker and Predrag Mijatovic with money out of his own pocket.
In 2006 a new attempted attempt to have the second term as president of the club, being defeated by Ramón Calderón. After that, the businessman gives up on the club in the Spanish capital, and even buys another club from Spain, Málaga CF. He remained the owner until 2010 when he sold it to a Qatar investor.
He was the president responsible for hiring Roberto Carlos, who expresses his gratitude and tribute, in the excerpts of this text of his own authorship, published on the site “The Players Tribune”,
“Personally, the virus did not affect me. My family and I are healthy. But I feel sad for the families of those who died. I know some of them. As you may have seen in the news, in the last month, the virus took the life of Lorenzo Sanz, former Real Madrid president. He was the man who brought me to the club. He was 76 years old. When I heard that he had caught the virus, I prayed that he would recover. But I also knew that he had been sick for a while, and in the end the virus was one of the many things that took him away. ”
“The simple memory of Lorenzo makes me smile. Although he was the president, he was above all a fan. He lived for Real Madrid. He was always very involved, always with us in the locker rooms. When we tied or lost, he left us alone. But when we won titles, he was the first to embrace us. We loved him for his human qualities, for his optimism, for everything he was doing for madridismo. He was like a father to us. I was in contact with him daily. He always gave me advice. I could never call him Lorenzo Sanz, even if I tried! For me, he was always President, or Presi. ”
Lorenzo passed away on March 21, 2020 at the age of 76. In addition to the respiratory failure caused by the virus, the entrepreneur also suffered from renal failure.
