Roberto Carlos writes text about COVID-19 and memories of Real
In April, former Brazilian five-time world champion Roberto Carlos had a space on the English website “The Players Tribune” to write about the situation of the pandemic that is practically everywhere in the world.
Roberto Carlos, who lives in Madrid, says that he is obeying the quarantine and that he left home on only two occasions:
“Right now, however, like most people, I can't work. In the last month, I left the house twice - and only to go to the supermarket. Staying at home all day is driving me crazy, almost driving me up the walls. But for now, it is the only right thing to do. ”
He recalls one of the victims that the virus took in Madrid itself, former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz, who also suffered from other complications with kidney failure:
“Personally, the virus did not affect me. My family and I are healthy. But I feel sad for the families of those who died. I know some of them. As you may have seen in the news, in the last month, the virus took the life of Lorenzo Sanz, former Real Madrid president. He was the man who brought me to the club. He was 76 years old. When I heard that he had caught the virus, I prayed that he would recover. But I also knew that he had been ill for a while, and in the end the virus was one of the many things that took him away ”.
Roberto Carlos also brings back memories of his early years at Real, such as his first Champions League win in 1998 and elects him as his favorite moment for the Merengue club:
“Almost two years after my arrival, we were about to play the Champions League final with Juventus. As we all know, Real Madrid had - and still have - the greatest number of titles in the history of the competition, but at that time we had not won it in 32 years. We had played in the league that season. Juve was in the final for the third consecutive year. ”
“We played that final very well. Juve had many chances, but we won 1-0. We won this game not only with our quality, but with our motivation. We wanted more than them ”
Among many memories, Roberto Carlos ends his text in a moving way. Preferring to see the good side of all this chaos that the world is fighting:
“Some positive things have already emerged from this pandemic. We are realizing that we are all human beings with the same vulnerabilities. We are realizing that family is important, that friends are important, that we all need each other. We are realizing that something as simple as a few kind words in a video call can make a big difference in someone's life.
Now we have to continue working together. When we stay at home, we all fight this virus together, so that things can return to normal as quickly as possible. Like many, I miss football and look forward to the day when Real Madrid can return to Cibeles with another title. ”
“But right now, I just want to see people back on the streets again.
This is the victory that we are all fighting for. ”
