Roberto Carlos pass at Inter Milan

With only 22 years and 5 titles in his résumé, the 1.68 m defender Roberto Carlos arrived in Milan in 1995 to sign a contract with Inter. The Brazilian was hired by Inter because of an unusual gentlemen's agreement made behind the scenes.
Inter's intention in that window was to fill its last vacancy as a foreigner with Barcelona's Bulgarian striker Hristo Stoichkov, who had won France Football's Golden Ball the previous year. However, who really hired the highlight of the Catalan team was Parma, a club that was controlled by the Tanzi family, who also owned Parmalat and sponsored Palmeiras. With that, Parma gave carte blanche to Internazionale to close with the highlight of the Brazilian club.
With that, Roberto Carlos was hired together with Javier Zanetti and Paul Ince, being the second most expensive transfer, just behind Ince.
Inter's coach at the time was Ottavio Bianchi, who was soon fired after falling to Lugano in the UEFA Cup. The Spanish Luis Suárez took on an interim role and, even with the club's poor performance, Roberto Carlos scores 5 goals in his first 8 games. A feat that was to be expected of an attacker or offensive midfielder. Roberto Carlos lived a great time for the Italian club, until the arrival of the new coach, the English Roy Hodgson.
As soon as he arrived, the English coach started improvising Roberto Carlos as an open midfielder on the left, in the 4-4-2, which greatly bothered the Brazilian who was still fighting for a starting place in the left side of the Brazilian team. The Englishman still considered Roberto Carlos tactically undisciplined in his new position. Roberto Carlos explained this whole situation after he retired:

“How could I play forward with just five feet? I would like to have space to play. It is better to have 80 meters to run than to have 20. If I continued like this, I would lose my space as a sideline ”, he once said to an Italian radio. “It was great to play for Inter, but I'm glad I left. Otherwise I wouldn't have played for ten years at Real Madrid, ”he added.
Inter finished this season in seventh place, with a place in the UEFA Cup the following year. Roberto Carlos realized that he would be losing a lot by continuing on a team, in which his coach did not put him in the correct position. Even closing the season with 7 goals, being the team's third top scorer of the season, the full-back went to the president to beg to be negotiated. The president did not take any action to prevent the Brazilian, even negotiating for less than what was hired.
And so Roberto Carlos' passage through Italy ended. It had been an express request from Real's new coach, Fabio Capello. The Italian had been a coach at Milan while Roberto Carlos was at Inter and had a chance to observe the Brazilian closely.
Roberto Carlos has always stated that Roy Hodgson was the reason for his departure from Inter and that Fabio Capello was the most important coach in his career.
At Real Madrid it was more than 10 years with three Champions League and infinite idolatry.
